A Deck Of Cards

(this is an old, old story - I was still in early grade school - that I remember my dad telling us. I'm not sure if the intro is right, all I remember is that there was a soldier and he was getting reprimanded and he said that the cards was also his Bible. Anyway, I think this is something worth keeping so I tried to remember what they all meant and then posted it.)

A soldier was reprimanded by a priest for bringing in a deck of cards inside the Church, saying that it was a sign of disrespect to God. The soldier replied that his deck of cards served as his Bible and Almanac with each card representing something.

Ace - there is one God
Two - there are two testaments in the Bible: old and new
Three - there are three persons in one God
Four - the four evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
Five - in one of Jesus' parables about a late-arriving bridegroom, there were five maidens who were prepared for the coming of the groom and five who weren't. Jesus used this to symbolize that we should always be prepared.
Six - God created the world in six days
Seven - and God rested on the seventh day
Eigth - there were eight people who were saved in Noah's ark during the great flooding: Noah and his wife, his three sons and their wives
Nine - nine out of the ten lepers whom Jesus healed didn't thank him; only one did. We should always be that one person who remembered to thank Jesus.
Ten - the ten commandments
Jack - represents the devil
Queen - represents Mother Mary
King - represents God
Each deck of cards is composed of four decks - each month is composed of four weeks
A deck of cards has fifty-two cards - each year has fifty-two weeks
There are twelve character cards - there are twelve months in a year
